I have been actively engaged in this process Since January 24, 2017. Keep in mind that this is a developing concept and an experiment, so please understand that this process is fluid. However, I have decided to include a few process guidelines to help you get started.
- Using Facebook, go to any news site, or any article on your feed that relates to politics and look through the comments. You will find countless people to engage with.
- Choose someone to talk to and reply to their post directly to their post.
- Use neutral, non-combative, and respectful language. I first began with “Hi ________ thank you for posting your thoughts via Facebook. I do not know you and do not want to shame, blame, or insult you for your opinions, perspective, or beliefs. I saw your post and your perspective interested me.
- Do the Research. If you are going to discuss politics in this volatile situation with a person who has a different point of view, you cannot offer opinions, just primary source information. (I have listed all the sources I have used so far at the bottom of the page.)
- Keep it as short as possible. I struggle with this one because the issues require nuanced and well-researched thought which requires time. Sometimes I am only able to respond to one person a day because I spent some more time trying to decipher government documents. I have learned so much!
- End with either an invitation or a positive assumption. Sometime, I ask if they would be willing to engage in a political discussion on a topic they feel is important. Sometimes, I simply say, “I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks again.
- Hashtag. This is about building a movement fueled by creating conversations; more people, more conversations, more information and more willingness to listen and respond. Now is a time for connections. #CreatingaNationUnited #CanU
