Process Guidelines: #CanU

I have been actively engaged in this process Since January 24, 2017. Keep in mind that this is a developing concept and an experiment, so please understand that this process is fluid. However, I have decided to include a few process guidelines to help you get started.

  1. Using Facebook, go to any news site, or any article on your feed that relates to politics and look through the comments. You will find countless people to engage with.
  2. Choose someone to talk to and reply to their post directly to their post.
  3. Use neutral, non-combative, and respectful language. I first began with “Hi ________ thank you for posting your thoughts via Facebook. I do not know you and do not want to shame, blame, or insult you for your opinions, perspective, or beliefs. I saw your post and your perspective interested me.
  4. Do the Research. If you are going to discuss politics in this volatile situation with a person who has a different point of view, you cannot offer opinions, just primary source information. (I have listed all the sources I have used so far at the bottom of the page.)
  5. Keep it as short as possible. I struggle with this one because the issues require nuanced and well-researched thought which requires time. Sometimes I am only able to respond to one person a day because I spent some more time trying to decipher government documents. I have learned so much!
  6. End with either an invitation or a positive assumption. Sometime, I ask if they would be willing to engage in a political discussion on a topic they feel is important. Sometimes, I simply say, “I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks again.
  7. Hashtag. This is about building a movement fueled by creating conversations; more people, more conversations, more information and more willingness to listen and respond. Now is a time for connections. #CreatingaNationUnited #CanU
